Filterblasen oder Fringeblasen?

At 6 p.m. at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Prof. Dr. Judith Möller will talk about whether social media contribute to the emergence of filter bubbles, whether algorithm-based selection can ensure more diversity and how the use of social media is linked to the political interests of users.

The public event is part of the Colloquium Fundamentale.
About the Presentation
Political polarization is increasing, and social cohesion is dwindling - developments that are associated with the emergence of filter bubbles in social media. It is often said that these platforms create one-sided online echo chambers in which extreme positions reinforce each other. However, current research shows little evidence of filter bubbles in the population as a whole. Can algorithm-based selection sometimes even lead to more diversity and how does this relate to users' political interests? Is the idea of ubiquitous filter bubbles misleading or is it not rather a niche audience, the so-called fringe bubbles? These and other questions will be addressed in this presentation.
