The discussion about the assumed influence of digital communication on political processes continues in 2018. The public debate on these and related topics is one that is often held in a hysterical way and far from well-founded, scientific findings. After all, the alleged influence of micro-targeting and “big data” on elections, political processes and in democracies is not scientifically proven at all. This is where the lecture series of Universität Hamburg starts in the winter semester 2018/2019. Designed as a course of lectures, the lecture series ‘Stimmen aus Wissenschaft und Praxis  [Voices from Science and Practice]’ offers a platform to objectify the subject area "Digitalisierung der Demokratie [Digitisation of Democracy]". The lectures will shed light on the scientific research on changing of public discourse through digital media and discuss how so-called new media are strategically used by different actors.

Furthermore, experts from electoral campaign practice will speak about the role of algorithms and social media strategies in the past Bundestag election campaign and in current state elections. Finally, representatives from science and practice will meet in a final panel to take a look at the future of election campaigns in Germany.
