The English language within Young People's Media Environments

The English language within Young People's Media Environments

English plays a significant role in adolescent life: actual English lessons are supplemented with academic and non-academic travels to English-speaking countries, the contact with native speakers as part of globalization and lastly the media, specifically the internet, which play a paramount role.

This realization was the starting point of the interdisciplinary project that has been pursued by the Hans-Bredow-Institut in cooperation with researchers from Purdue University as well as from universities in Nijmegen, Brussels and Liège. From a linguistic and educational point of view, the question arises what role media play when it comes to acquiring the English language and how they influence the level of competence in English.

Project Description

The project touches on several questions that are relevant to media and communication science: what meaning will future foreign-language media products have? How do media contribute to intercultural communication? And how are specific media environments constituted that adolescents from different cultural environments surround themselves with? At the same time, this projects aims to conduct a European comparative study.

A jointly developed questionnaire was used for several surveys in Hamburg, Nijmegen, Liège and an outskirt of Brussels, which allows comparative statements on the role of the English language in the everyday life of young Europeans.

In Hamburg, the survey was carried out in the summer of 1999, a joint report of the participating partners was finished in 2003 and should be published in 2004.
