{"id":6206,"date":"2025-07-18T16:35:36","date_gmt":"2025-07-18T14:35:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/leibniz-hbi.de\/?post_type=hbi-events&#038;p=6206"},"modified":"2025-07-23T10:54:56","modified_gmt":"2025-07-23T08:54:56","slug":"harmonizing-ai-with-democracies","status":"publish","type":"hbi-events","link":"https:\/\/leibniz-hbi.de\/en\/hbi-events\/harmonizing-ai-with-democracies\/","title":{"rendered":"Harmonizing AI with Democracies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As part of the \u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiig.de\/en\/events\/digitaler-salon-theres-no-app-for-that\/\">Digitaler Salon<\/a>\u201d event series organized by the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG), the question of how digital transformation can be shaped in such a way that our democratic principles do not fall by the wayside will be discussed starting at 7 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Moderator Katja Weber, radio eins\/rbb, will talk with <a href=\"https:\/\/philosophy.wisc.edu\/staff\/zimmermann-annette\/\">Professor Annette Zimmermann,<\/a> University of Wisconsin-Madison, and other experts about how technical progress can be shaped democratically.<\/p>\n<p>The introduction will be given by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiig.de\/en\/jelle-ohnesorge\/\">Jella Ohnesorge<\/a>, student assistant in the DSA research network at HIIG.<\/p>\n<p>The event &#8220;<span lang=\"de\">KI in Einklang mit Demokratien bringen<\/span>&#8221; [Harmonizing AI with Democracies] will be held in German.<\/p>\n<h2>About the Event<\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;Move fast and break things&#8221; has been the mantra of major U.S. tech companies, such as Meta, Google, and OpenAI, for over 15 years, turning our everyday lives upside down. Fast, loud, consequential. But who pays the price in the end? In the United States, tech companies are firmly entrenched in the corridors of power, while regulations for artificial intelligence are often not even passed in the first place. In Europe, on the other hand, attempts are being made to rein in the industry and protect fundamental democratic values. Innovation, power, responsibility: a race for the future is beginning between Washington and Brussels. It is not just a question of free markets versus strict rules, but also of what happens to our democracies when technologies grow faster than our ability to shape them. Are we losing control while unelected actors in Silicon Valley have long since established the facts? Is there a harmonized path to the common good and technological progress?
