Social Cohesion – Experiences and Expectations of People with Disabilities Regarding Participation

On behalf of Aktion Mensch, PD Dr. Jan-Hinrik Schmidt and Milena Braun of the Hamburg Section of the Research Institute Social Cohesion examined how people with disabilities assess social cohesion in Germany. When compared with a similar survey of the general population, the findings indicate a weaker sense of belonging among people with disabilities. People with disabilities also view the current state of democracy in Germany more critically. However, overall, they have greater trust in our society’s institutions and are more likely than the general population to engage in all forms of political and volunteer work.
