Dr. Mohammedwesam Amer is a visiting researcher at the Leibniz Institute for Media Research | Hans-Bredow-Institut since November 2023.
Since summer 2024 he is a visiting researcher and Cara/SRF fellow at Cambridge.
Wesam Amer is the Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Languages at the University of Gaza in Palestine since 2020. During the 2022 academic year, he was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Researcher at Harvard University’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies. Prior to that, he was a Marie Curie Fellow and postdoctoral researcher at Newcastle University in the United Kingdom from 2017 to 2020.
Wesam Amer completed his PhD at Universität Hamburg in Germany between 2011 and 2015.
His teaching and research experience is in the field of mainstream and social media communication, linguistics and (critical) discourse studies.
In his research projects and lectures, he deals with questions of culture, social media, religions and geopolitics in their interrelation and hyper/interconnectivity to the Middle East region. This is done through the study of social media platforms and online media productions.
Examples of his research studies include:
- The social media practices of the Islamic State in mobilizing young people online,
- the self-portrayal of radicals on the internet,
- the portrayal of social actors in the international news press and
- the communication strategies of Hamas in the social media.
