This position is part of the DFG and FWF-funded research group 5656, “Communicative AI: The Automation of Societal Communication,” within project P6: Political discourse: ComAI and deliberative quality (principal investigators: Prof. Dr. Cornelius Puschmann, Dr. Gregor Wiedemann).

The Research Unit explores how communicative AI transforms societal communication. During the first funding period (2025-2028), the focus will be on the emergence and construction of communicative AI, including its governance by corporations and legal frameworks, its appropriation in journalism, online public discourse, and education. The group employs cutting-edge social science and HCI methods, including digital and computational approaches.

Job description

Project P6 is jointly based at the ZeMKI, University of Bremen, and the Leibniz Institute for Media Research | Hans-Bredow-Institut, Hamburg. The project examines communicative AI in political discourse through online discourse monitoring and intervention. Using an experimental approach, we will investigate the impact of social bots on the quality of public deliberation on social media with the help of large language models (LLMs). Combining discourse theory with the latest AI advancements, we aim to both monitor and actively intervene in public policy discussions

Your Responsibilities

As a research associate (f/m/d), you will develop and evaluate LLM-based systems for assessing discourse quality and AI-driven interventions in social media communication. Specific tasks include:

  • Automated content analysis using LLMs for thematic classification and operationalizing discourse quality.
  • Developing prompt strategies and training/evaluation of data sets for LLMs.
  • Collaborating with communication science researchers to define content-analysis categories and discourse intervention strategies.
  • Building LLM-based chatbots with API interfaces for various social media platforms.
  • Monitoring and evaluating debates on social media platforms.
  • Publishing research findings in scientific publications and presenting at conferences.

The position offers the opportunity to pursue a PhD, which should be completed within the project timeframe (by 2028).

Your Profile

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, with a focus on Natural Language Processing (NLP). Candidates from other disciplines must demonstrate proven expertise in NLP.
  • Strong programming skills in Python.
  • Experience with open source LLMs.
  • Familiarity with NLP/LLM frameworks, such as Huggingface, Transformers, LangChain, Ollama, or Unsloth.
  • Knowledge of automatic content analysis methods.
  • German language proficiency (B2 level or higher).
  • Excellent English skills (written and spoken).
  • Commitment to pursuing a PhD in Computer Science or Computational Communication Science.
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to collaborate in an interdisciplinary team.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with argument mining.
  • Familiarity with databases.
  • Experience working with command line interfaces (CLI) and cloud computing platforms (AWS, Google Cloud).
  • Knowledge of the development of communicative AI.
  • Prior experience in interdisciplinary projects.

Together with ten other institutes and universities, the HBI is a partner in the “Research Institute Social Cohesion” (RISC/FGZ). HBI contributes to several sub-projects, with a particular focus on the role of media in fostering social cohesion.

The advertised position is assigned to the RISC sub-project “Social Media Observatory” (SMO), which is housed within the HBI’s Media Research Methods Lab. Since its launch in 2020, the SMO has been developed as an open science research infrastructure within RISC. Its primary goal is the long-term monitoring of public communication on selected social media platforms and online news media to address research questions in the social and communication sciences.

To achieve this, the SMO systematically collects and analyzes large scale (network) structure data, content data, and metadata using computational social science methods. Additionally, the SMO provides consultation and training for RISC researchers interested in social media research.

The project team currently consists of two research associates and two student assistants. We are now seeking a postdoctoral researcher to coordinate and further develop the SMO during the second funding phase of RISC (06/2024-05/2029).

Your Responsibilities

  • Coordination of work packages within the BMBF-funded project “Social Media Observatory” (SMO)
  • Conceptualization and development of the SMO’s technical infrastructure for data collection and analysis
  • Advancement of methodologies in social media research
  • Collaboration in interdisciplinary teams to address thematic and social science research questions
  • Publishing research findings in scientific publications and presenting at conferences
  • Organization of academic events, such as invited talks and methodology workshops
  • Active participation in internal RISC and HBI meetings and tasks, particularly within the Media Research Methods Lab

Your profile

  • University degree, preferably in computer science, data science, computational social science, or digital humanities; candidates from other disciplines must demonstrate proven knowledge in the field of computer science
  • PhD in computer science or a social science related to CSS
  • Experience in applying and developing CSS methods, such as network analysis, natural language processing, multimodal media content analysis, or evaluation of tracking/digital trace data
  • Strong programming skills and experience in research IT infrastructure development, preferably in Python or R
  • Experience working with databases
  • Familiarity with Command Line Interfaces (CLI) and cloud computing technologies (AWS, Google Cloud) is an advantage
  • Willingness to publish scientific research
  • Proficiency in English (written and spoken)
  • Proficiency in German (B2 Level for non-native speakers)

Are you interested in research in media, social and historical sciences? Current projects in the competence area of “Media History” investigate communicative processes in the past as well as current communicative processes that refer to history and the past.

The area of expertise is part of the research program “Knowledge for the Media Society”. As a student or research assistant, you will support projects at the intersection of media, social, and historical research.
