Did Algorithms and Fake News Decide the Election?

  • Date: 25.03.25
  • Location: Hamburg
  • Time: 19:00 h

In a public lecture as part of Hamburg’s Week of Science Communication, Prof. Dr. Judith Möller will discuss the extent to which algorithms and fake news in social media influence political voting behavior.

In her lecture “Haben Algorithmen und Fake News die Wahl entschieden?” [Did Algorithms and Fake News Decide the Election?], Judith Möller will first explain how algorithms in social media work and why the influence of individual fake news on voting behaviour is rather small. More important is the long-term effect: social media shape what is considered relevant and what is considered normal. In this way, they influence the climate of opinion and shape political discourse over time.
