Research Assistant in the Field of Computational Social Science

The Leibniz Institute for Media Research | Hans-Bredow-Institut (HBI) in Hamburg is seeking to fill one position as of April 1, 2026: Research assistant (all genders) in the field of Computational Social Science – focus on social media, social scientific support.

Limited until September 30, 2026, monthly working hours 60-80 hours, place of work Hamburg.

The remuneration is based on the rates of the University of Hamburg and amounts to 13.98 EUR/hour for undergraduate research assistants (in the Bachelor’s program) and 16.05 EUR/hour for graduate research assistants (in the Master’s program) in the summer semester 2026, which potentially increases in accordance with the regulations of the UHH. An extension for further semesters is possible and desirable upon presentation of a current certificate of enrollment.

What we are looking for

The Leibniz Institute for Media Research, as one of eleven locations of the “Research Institute Social Cohesion (RISC)”, focuses on the role of the media in stabilizing or endangering social cohesion. It conducts a series of research projects and communicates the results to the interested public in various formats.  You support this work through:

  • searching for literature and recording relevant studies
  • preparation of reports, presentations and publications
  • collaboration in the conception, implementation and follow-up of data collection in social media and data analysis
  • support with research administration activities
  • participation in internal meetings

Your profile

  • ongoing studies in communication science or another social science degree program (Bachelor’s or Master’s degree)
  • interest in questions of computational social sciences, especially computational communication science
  • initial knowledge of quantitative research methods
