Student Assistant Media History

The Leibniz Institute for Media Research | Hans-Bredow-Institut (HBI) in Hamburg, Germany, invites applications for the following position starting 1 April 2025: Student/Research assistant (m/f/d) in the field of media, social and historical studies, limited until 30 September 2025 | monthly/weekly working hours 40/9.20 hours | work location Hamburg.

The remuneration is based on the rates of Universität Hamburg and amounts to 13.98 EUR/hour for student assistants (in the bachelor’s program) and 16.05 EUR/hour for research assistants (in the master’s program) in the summer semester of 2025.

Are you interested in research in media, social and historical sciences? Current projects in the competence area of “Media History” investigate communicative processes in the past as well as current communicative processes that refer to history and the past.

The area of expertise is part of the research program “Knowledge for the Media Society”. This program is dedicated to the question of how evidence-based knowledge from media and communication studies can help to meet the challenges of media change. Dr. Hans-Ulrich Wagner is senior researcher and project manager.

Your Responsibilities

As a student or research assistant, you will support projects at the intersection of media, social, and historical research. You will research various issues related to media companies, media biographies, media offerings, and their role in the public sphere. You will work with us to evaluate sources and documents and help prepare reports, presentations, and publications in German and English, as well as organize conferences and conduct interviews. The position offers in-depth insights into the work of an interdisciplinary research institute and the implementation of current research projects.

  • You should have studied media, social or historical sciences.
  • Have an interest in questions of media and communication history and the current challenges associated with them.
  • You should be committed to working in a research-oriented team.
