Dr. Stephan Dreyer will speak about the current legal framework for age verification and age verification in digital spaces at the medien impuls symposium. He will then take part in a final discussion with other experts on the question “Welche Risiken werden durch Alterskontrollen minimiert – und welche bleiben oder entstehen?” [Which risks are minimized by age checks – and which remain or arise?]. The event will be held in German.12
The symposium takes place twice a year and is dedicated to current media topics and phenomena that affect society and politics. The focus of this event is on the following questions: What has been achieved so far, and what regulatory developments are shaping the debate? How are age verification systems implemented in practice by service providers, and what else needs to be considered? The effects of such systems on the user experience and behavior of children and young people will also be discussed.
About the Event
Whether it’s ID checks at the digital door or age estimation via selfie – whether it’s centralized for the device or customized in each app: the calls for reliable age verification systems are getting louder and louder – yet gaps remain in the systematized implementation. While individual countries continue to develop their own approaches, a task force is meeting at the EU level. However, it remains unclear at which interfaces in the system of youth media protection age verification actually works and which age-related risks it eliminates. This is countered by the question of what impact age checks have on the empowerment and participation of young people in the digital world. After all, this does not automatically create safe digital spaces for them.
