Public debates about age limits for social media use and smartphone use in schools are highly emotional topics. There are often calls for blanket bans. However, young people need more than symbolic politics. On the one hand, there is a need for viable concepts that enable providers, politicians, parents, and educational professionals to fulfill their shared responsibility of accompanying, protecting, and empowering children and young people online. On the other hand, we must ensure that young people have a sense of direction in life, as well as a voice and a place in the digital world.

At the 14th Medienpädagogische Küchentalk [Media Education Kitchen Talk] on September 16 at the Museum for Communication in Berlin, we will discuss this issue in more detail:

  • What role do age limits play in child and youth protection?
  • How can protection needs be reconciled with the rights to participation and empowerment?
  • What media education perspectives and experiences can contribute constructively to the public debate?

We discuss these questions openly, critically, and in a solution-oriented manner with experts from the fields of practice and science.
