On deck of the MS Wissenschaft in Hamburg, together with journalists and academics from the fields of media and political science, we will take a look at three fundamental values of our society: freedom of the press, freedom of expression and academic freedom. We will shed light on the development of these freedoms in Germany and worldwide and discuss their conditions, threats and mutual influences. Why is freedom of the press and freedom of expression as well as academic freedom important and relevant? How do these freedoms overlap, differ and influence each other? How free do journalists and scientists feel? And from which sides do journalism and science come under pressure?
On the Podium
Prof. Dr. Wiebke Loosen is Senior Researcher for Journalism Research at the HBI and Deputy Head of the Hamburg section of the Research Institute Social Cohesion (FGZ). Her research focuses on the transformation of journalism in a changing media environment, the journalism/audience relationship and the datafication and automation of communication. In the German sub-study of the world’s largest journalism study, Worlds of Journalism, Wiebke Loosen and Anna von Garmissen are investigating the journalistic profession by means of a representative survey. The survey looks at various aspects of journalism, including working conditions, role perceptions, ethical attitudes and perceived dangers and challenges.
As an agency journalist, Malte Werner learned to get to the heart of the matter. As a freelance reporter, he then discovered his love for the long form and at the same time realized that this type of (freelance) journalism is not based on a sustainable business model. At Netzwerk Recherche, he therefore works to strengthen non-profit journalism and runs the “Helpline” project – a support service for journalists with psychosocial problems.
Dr. Lars Lott is a political scientist at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and conducts research on academic freedom and democratization and autocratization processes, among other things. In the Academic Freedom Index, published jointly with the University of Gothenburg, he examines the state of academic freedom worldwide.

About the MS Wissenschaft
MS Wissenschaft is a project within the Science Year 2024 – Freedom funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and will be touring Germany from 14 May to 15 September. The exhibition is being realized by Wissenschaft im Dialog (WiD). Children from the age of twelve, young people and adults will become researchers and experience science up close. The exhibits come from various scientific disciplines and illustrate how multifaceted research on the topic of freedom is. In addition to the exhibition, there is a varied program of events in many tour locations with discussion events, readings and workshops for school classes. From 12 to 16 June, the MS Wissenschaft will be docking at the Port of Hamburg.
