Where Search and AI Converge – and the Media Might Fall Silent

What impact will the convergence of traditional internet search and generative artificial intelligence have on the information ecosystem? This question will be discussed at the 16th Hamburg Media Symposium, which is organized by the HBI, the Media Authority of Hamburg/Schleswig-Holstein (MA HSH), and the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce.

The Information Crescendo: Where Search and AI Converge—and Media Might Fall Silent

Traditional search and generative artificial intelligence (AI) are converging from both sides. Through a process known as “grounding” — based, among other things, on media content — AI bots can now answer questions citizens would typically ask the media. Meanwhile, search engines are integrating AI elements into their functionality and presentation of findings. These developments have significant implications for the information ecosystem and could potentially threaten media offerings. It is crucial that we develop a deeper understanding of the architecture of these technologies and the diverse information needs of the people who rely on these services.

As part of this event, we aim to provide context for the heated debate by drawing on insights from communication studies, media law, regulation, and media economics, and to discuss these issues from various practical perspectives.

The event “Wo Suche und KI aufeinandertreffen – und Medien verstummen könnten” [Where Search and AI Converge – and the Media Might Fall Silent] will be held in German. Further details about the program will follow.
