In his Leibniz Magazine article, Prof. Dr. Matthias C. Kettemann explains why AI companies could provide the answer to making AI development safer and more equitable. He notes that it is a good thing that Dario Amodei, Sam Altman, and Elon Musk want to slow down. “It is important that they share the time they hope to gain with those who need it most urgently to acquire the capabilities and expertise that will enable the safe and equitable use of AI by both the public and private sectors.”

Background
In September, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres presented a report to the General Assembly on the challenges that developing countries face in developing AI capabilities. Shortly thereafter, Dario Amodei, the CEO of the AI company Anthropic, published an essay on his website titled “We Must Pace the Frontier.” In it, he argues that the industry must slow down the development of its models. While both texts contain some of the same demands, their perspectives are at odds with one another.
