Smart glasses, which are data glasses equipped with a camera, AI, and an internet connection, raise new questions about the protection of personal rights. However, according to Prof. Dr. Matthias Kettemann, new bans are not necessarily needed. Rather, existing laws must be enforced more consistently. “It is prohibited to post online content that you have simply filmed of people,” he explained on the ZDF heute program.

In this interview, Matthias Kettemann explains why the planned tightening of digital violence protection measures, while sensible, addresses only a limited portion of the problems associated with smart glasses. The new regulations are intended to apply exclusively to sexualized or voyeuristic recordings. Therefore, it is crucial to raise awareness of the challenges and dangers posed by this technology and enforce existing laws.
At the same time, Matthias Kettemann also sees companies as having a responsibility. Europe could establish guidelines for smart glasses through product-specific safety regulations. His proposal: The European Union could require platforms to rigorously review and take action against recordings made with smart glasses. The European Commission’s risk assessments could serve as the basis for this requirement.
