Dr. Hans-Ulrich Wagner will speak at the “Forum on Democracy and the Culture of Remembrance” about the role of the media in the culture of remembrance. The event will explore the responsibilities of the media and its users, particularly in the context of a critical culture of remembrance.
From Hugenberg to Musk: The Responsibility of the Media in Times of Democracy and Authoritarian Rule
In modern democracies, our understanding of reality is shaped significantly by the quality of the mass media, encompassing both traditional and digital platforms, and the work of journalists. How do we perceive our society and its history? Which issues take priority? Which conflicts threaten liberal democracy? Today, global online platforms shape markets and public debates like never before. However, as technological developments advance, so do the political and ethical challenges related to history, remembrance, and memory.
How should we deal with the flood of information, targeted misinformation, and fake news? How can we strengthen our resilience? What does media responsibility—and the responsibility of its users—mean today, especially when it comes to fostering a culture of critical remembrance?
