Abstract
The creation of publicity and the mediated communication of information and news are no longer in the hands of professional journalists alone but are now complemented by numerous other actors. On the one hand, the new information and communication technologies provide unprecedented opportunities for the comprehensive information and participation of large parts of the population, which means that they contain a great potential for more knowledge and increased participation in social discussions and decisions. On the other hand, the reach of most established news media is declining without an equal increase in the use of digital offerings; the willingness to pay for digital news is low (Hölig et al., 2021; Newman et al., 2021).
